Towards the end, it almost feels like the development team ran out of time, but was still obligated to produce 32 levels. The office areas in the beginning of the game are designed with purposeful detail, that makes you want to explore. The quality of the level design starts at it's best and slowly descends at a 45 degree angle as the game progresses. I like the armor system, in where you need incrementally stronger weapons to harm incrementally stronger enemy types. The flying mines are annoying because they can surprise you around corners. There's a good variety, but they are basically all different sizes of the same shoe. (This includes outmoding the mini-gun and grenade launcher, which aren't even available yet.) The only positive thing I can say, is that since there are a lot of weapons to acquire, it's a consistent pleasure to find a new one. This weapon makes every other obsolete, as it provides the ultimate firepower, and recharges it's own ammo quickly. Approximately half way through the game, you will acquire the plasma rifle (assuming that you found all of the parts). The shotgun uses it's own ammo, but it's comparable to the Uzi in effectiveness, making it equally obsolete at the time you first locate one. Every new weapon up to the AK47 makes every preceding weapon obsolete in ammo efficiency and firepower. There is no backup weapon for when your out of ammo. Despite the misleading box art, you don't play as a terminator, but you will feel like one, given the amount of abuse that your character can shrug off, and the insane amount of ammo you can carry. You can't make a bad game when following in those footsteps. (Prequel, depending on how you view time travel as a plot device.) It's Wolf 3D disguised under living human tissue, grown for the cyborgs. Terminator Rampage is the sequel to The Terminator 2029. Overall, a good effort that doesn't live up to other Terminator games.
This is unfortunate, as the game has a good potential to be a great game once kinks in the engine and all bugs are ironed out. The game feels rushed and unfinished- as if Bethesda was scrambling to meet a publishing deadline. Despite more impressive graphics, however, the gameplay is somewhat inferior to the first 2 Terminator games from Bethesda due to numerous bugs and boring level design. The game is based on the engine used in earlier Terminator 2029, but with obvious graphics enhancements. You must destroy the Machines before they terminate Mankind. They thought the holocaust had ended when the Orbital Platform was destroyed.
The plot is standard post-apocalyptic mumbo-jumbo: it's the year 2029 in Los Angeles. Terminator: Rampage is the third game in Bethesda's "The Terminator" (tm) series, in which you must travel to the past in order to protect the future.
